According to an article in the news website Digitimes China display manufacturers continue to ramp up capacity for LCD applications, in response Korea display manufacturers are expected to increase AMOLED production as well as product lines to maintain a competitive edge in the market.

China display manufacturers are aiming to dominate the LCD supply for China vendors in the upcoming years by increasing capacity and reduced pricing, both of which are leaving Korea display manufacturers worrying about the long-term prospects of their LCD businesses.

As AMOLED production costs are expected to fall and Korea vendors are aiming to release more products featuring AMOLED to remain at the leading edge of technology.

Digitimes Research are forecasting that large-area LCD panel capacity in China will increase 28.2% in 2016 and 17.7% in 2017. The expected growth will come mainly as China and Korea panel makers expand Gen 8.5 production in China.

In 2016, China will account for 26% of global large-area(9-inch and above) LCD panel capacity and 29% in 2017. By 2018 when China unveils new capacity at Gen 10.5 and Gen 8.5 fabs the country is expected to hold the number two position globally in large-area LCD production, said Digitimes Research.

Industry analysts expect Innolux to develop Gen 8.6 facilities that will go into production in the third quarter of 2016. Innolux is reported to be aiming to produce LCD TV panels in a range of sizes from as small as 5 inch all the way through to 100 inch.
